When you arrive at the clinic for your initial Osteopathic consultation you will be greeted by your Osteopath and given a patient questionnaire to fill out(Please ensure you arrive 10 minutes prior to your appointment time to fill out patient questionnaire) Your initial visit will allow the Osteopath to take a history relating to your presenting complaint and then perform a physical assessment to help create a treatment and management plan tailored for you. Your Osteopathic treatment will then commence which will start with a massage by one of our highly skilled massage therapists, followed by treatment from Dr Mathew Kirk(Osteopath) for the  the remainder of the consultation and may include posture and ergonomics advice, stretches and exercise prescription. Remedial massage is a complimentary therapy that aims to treat muscles that are damaged, knotted, tense or immobile. It is useful for a number of problems that affect the muscles, tendons and bones and can address a number of other health problems.

Remedial massage is used to locate and repair damaged areas of the body and speed up the body’s own healing processes. The pressure applied in this healing treatment can either be strong and deep or gentle and shallow, depending on the problem.

Problems with the muscles can trigger or radiate pain to other parts of the body. Remedial massage aims to trace the original reason for the pain, tackling both the cause of the problem and the symptoms.

Remedial massage can be used to help people with:

  • neck, shoulder or back pain
  • preventing injuries
  • headaches
  • sports or other injuries
  • arthritis
  • chronic pain
  • fatigue
  • anxiety or depression
  • to treat the side effects of cancer, such as lymphoedema, Anxiety
  • to manage the side effects of diabetes
  • to help with addiction rehabilitation

Deep tissue massage uses many of the same movements and techniques as lighter styles, e.g. Swedish massage, but the pressure will generally be more intense. It is also a more focused type of massage, as the therapist works to release chronic muscle tension or knots. Deep tissue massage is excellent for chronic tightness, scar formation, repetitive strain or regular high-intensity exercises.

A quality deep-tissue massage helps to:

  • loosen muscle tissues,
  • release toxins from muscles, and
  • get blood and oxygen circulating properly.

Relaxation massage, as its name suggests, is a form of massage therapy that focuses on providing general relaxation, relieving muscle tension and improving blood circulation. Its primary goal is to assist the client in escaping the demands of their mundane tasks and taking quality time to recover from the stresses of everyday life. When you want to receive a relaxation massage, you can expect the treatment to involve:

  • Long, smooth, gliding strokes that are both rhythmic and flowing
  • Pressure that is deeply relaxing, but not painful
  • A treatment designed to relax and soothe you, but not to relieve chronic pain or other underlying conditions
  • A therapist who also takes the massage environment into account – looks for soothing music, warm towels, and occasionally uses essential oils to enhance both the environment and the effects of the massage

Just like other styles of massage, the benefits of a relaxation massage usually last several days after receiving the treatment. It may not be the absolute cure for any health problem, but getting regular massage, specifically relaxation massage, can offer the following benefits:

  • Relieves back and neck pain
  • Lowers blood pressure – at least for a while
  • Improves peripheral circulation
  • Improves skin tone and appearance
  • Improves gastrointestinal motility, hence improving bowel movement and overall digestion
  • Reduces muscle tension such as the relief of muscle tension headaches
  • Relieves any stress -related symptoms:

This can include providing a boost to the immune system after undergoing regular treatments

  • Improves sleep
  • Supports healing of minor skin abrasions
  • Speeds up recovery of soft tissue injuries
  • Improves range of motion
  • Promotes relaxation

Lymphatic massage, or lymphatic drainage, is a gentle massage treatment to stimulate the circulation of lymph fluid around the body. This helps to speed up the removal of wastes and toxins. Lymphatic drainage can also be used to help people who have had damage to their lymphatic system following surgery, trauma or due to developmental disorders.

Lymphatic massage has very light pressure because the lymphatic system is close to the surface of the skin. It is not like a regular massage that has deeper pressure to massage the muscles. It also has a specific sequence to ensure the blocked lymph areas are cleared and the lymph is being moved in the right direction.
